Divine Pine Gathering

JULY 26-28 2024 | Irish Hills, MI

Plant Dye Basics with Jane McLemore

We will go over the solid basics of dying with plants and a few different techniques. Participants will get to dye one bandana.

I have been in love with plant dye for about 9 years now. Starting out with an undyed hemp swimsuit in the red clay at Abiqiui lake in NM, there was no end to exploring everything and anything I could extract color from. The passion and thrill for me is in the plants but also in a strong stance agains toxic clothing and in solidarity with the historical resistance against bourgeoisie classism.

Sliding scale $15-$20 max 30 students.

Herbal Hydrosols: Divine Distillation with Katie Fuller

Every attendee will with their own mini glass spray bottle of hydrosol. We will explore the history of distilling and the various uses of hydrosol, which is a gentle water based creation that is the result of steam stilling herbs, leaves, flowers, barks, fruits, and other plant materials to preserve their medicinal and aromatic properties.

Attendees will sample various hydrosols to get a feel for how they differ, watch the alembic copper still be assembled and loaded, and observe a live distillation. There will be an expansive herbal library and foraging guides available to read through while the slow magic takes place, as well as paper and pens for taking notes. Attendees are able to come and go if they please during the full distillation process as it will take a couple of hours to ensure a potent distillation. The final product will then be blessed, bottled and distributed to everyone afterwards.

Katie Fuller is a budding herbalist currently residing in Milford, Michigan. Over the last decade she has dabbled in various herbal endeavors by creating and vending her own line of body care products, teaching make and take workshops, writing educational herbalism based zines, and hosting skill share events to connect with her community. Her current passion is steam distilling medicinal plants to create fragrant hydrosol in her alembic copper still, a process she was taught back in 2019 which changed her life. Since then has enjoyed experimenting, expanding her knowledge on the subject, and sharing this ancient craft with others.

Weaving trays with Local Plants

We'll learn simple tests to identify plants that can be good weaving partners in different styles of wicker basketry. We'll talk about a range of processing methods, and you will then have the opportunity to make (and take home!) a soap saver tray woven with cured and resoaked plant materials of your choosing. Time permitting, we will also communally weave a larger tray with freshly collected materials that can be used as a centerpiece, wall hanging, or to dry herbs and mushrooms.

Michael is a plant tender, willow farmer, and weaver of baskets and caskets based in Southeast Michigan. She is a member of the Funerary Artisans Collective and the Michigan Deathcare Collective.  She weaves with heritage basketry willow, wild-tended willows, and increasingly also "invasive" species.  She believes reestablishing relationships with these overabundant and sometimes problematic plant species can improve ecosystem health, deepen our relationship with the living world, and make a lot of crafts more easily accessible.
